What’s covered?

  • Dwelling – covers your home and any attached structures.
  • Other Structures – covers any other private structures at your premises, such as garages, sheds, pools, and fences. Buildings used for business or farming are not automatically covered. Most companies give you 10-20% of the dwelling limit automatically, and you can raise the limit if needed.
  • Personal Property (“contents”) – covers personal contents in your home and in other structures on your premises. You automatically get 50-75% of the dwelling limit, and you can raise the limit if needed. Most companies also provide at least some coverage off-premises.
  • Loss of Use – covers additional living expenses when you are unable to live in your home due to a fire or other covered claim.
  • Personal Liability – for bodily injury or property damage claims resulting on your premises or due to your personal activities. We recommend at least $300,000, with many customers now choosing $500,000 or $1,000,000.
  • Medical Payments to Others – provides limited emergency medical expenses for visitors injured at your home. Most companies include $1,000, with higher limits available.

Available options:

  • Sewer and drain backup – provides coverage for water that backs up through a sewer or drain, including sump pump failure.  The cost is usually around $30.
  • Earthquake – often available as an endorsement to your homeowners policy.  The cost in our area is usually in the $25-100 range.
  • Flood – Flood insurance is a separate policy available through our agency and backed by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).  Premiums for flood insurance are typically $300 and up.
  • Additional coverage for jewelry, furs, silverware, guns, collections, etc. – Your homeowner’s policy provides coverage for these items, but contains limits for the amount payable for theft.  You can increase these limits, or add special scheduled coverage for valuable items.
  • Siding/roofing restoration – Covers additional expenses to replace hard-to-match siding or roofing.  The cost is usually $20-40.
  • Identity theft recovery – Identity Recovery Coverage is designed to help you restore your credit in the event of identity theft.  Coverage includes case management and assists with costs related to restoring your identity.  The cost is about $20.
  • Personal computer coverage – broadens and expands coverage on personal computers, and is particularly valuable for laptop computers and other portable devices.
